Monthly Modifications – Keep Your Website Up-To-Date
Update your site once a month with this checklist:
- Add new material. New material keeps your site vibrant,
and makes the site more robust over time. The new material also
gives search engines more to find, and offers prospective clients
a more complete picture of you, your business and your commitment. Most
importantly, new material maintains your connection
to the site, which increases the likelihood that you’ll
use it.Adding an article, news from your field, a teaser, or
a new question-and-answer to your FAQ list is an easy way to enrich
your content.
- Modify the text to match your development. Your
business is constantly evolving as you develop new interests and
skills. Use your Website to fine-tune your story – it will become
a magnet that attracts the
clients you really want and dissuades people who aren't a good
fit for your practice.
- Worry about the details. Little things such as years
in business, prices, price ranges, places you recommend, titles
or volunteer positions you hold, are worth keeping up-to-date.
- Check all your links. Make sure all your links are
functioning properly, and that there’s nothing glitchy is going
on. Sometimes links stop working because your hosting company made
changes on their server that affect your site. Sometimes it’s because
of gremlins.
Along with updating your site, ask yourself, "How do I feel
about my Website? How proud of it am I on a scale of 1-10?"
To me, this is the most important point. Your Website
is a marketing tool, and probably an integral part
of your marketing plan. The two of you are a team-dance partners,
if you will. So it's important to have good feelings about the site,
and to send people whenever you can.
If you are hesitating to send people to your site
for any reason – big
or small – then fix it, ASAP. If you are not using your
site because you've let it get out of date, you may be losing out
on referrals and new business.
